ALL ABOUT HERTALAN EPDM SYSTEMS

What does the abbreviation EPDM mean?

EPDM stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer. EPDM is a synthetic rubber it is highly resistant to UV, ozone and other atmospheric influences. In addition EPDM is known for its large and permanent flexibility. The material has more than 40 years of proven quality worldwide as a waterproofing material for flat roofs, ponds and other architectural applications.

What is a membrane?

EPDM can be fabricated together with hot bonding seams in our factory, this means we can produce large sheets, also known as membranes. With these membranes it is possible to seal a roof in one go, subject to specification. Additional seam connections in the installation are then no longer necessary. Membranes can be supplied with a maximum length of 45 metres and are available in variable widths.

When determining the size of the membrane consideration has to be given as to whether it is possible to get the membrane onto the roof and if there is sufficient labour on site to handle it.

What about fire resistance of EPDM?

We distinguish two types of fire safety: during installation and after installation.

/ During installation:

When installing traditional felt roofing, burners are used to melt the bitumen and adhere it to the roof. The seam is also melted together with open flames. The safety demands regarding hot works during processing are becoming ever more demanding. The Dutch NEN6050 standard provides regulations on the "design conditions for hot works on roofs".

When installing EPDM membrane there is no use of a naked flame. The EPDM can be attached in several ways onto the roof: adhered, mechanically fastened, or ballasted. The seams (if necessary) are adhered or sealed with a hot air gun. There is no requirement for naked flames!

The insurance companies have also recognised this and the insurance premiums for roofers who work exclusively with EPDM membranes is significantly lower than the premiums for the bituminous installer!

After installation:

In the Netherlands there are also requirements for the resistance of a roof to flying sparks, this is a requirement described in the Dutch Building Decree 2003. Hertalan EPDM easy cover FR membranes and hertalan easy weld products both comply to this regulation. We supply the most suitable roofing EPDM for each application, this can all be found in our KOMO certificate.

Why is EPDM sustainable?

EPDM is a very high quality product and this means that an EPDM membrane in only one layer of 1.2 mm can be used. EPDM still has an expected useful life of more than 50 years! When this is compared with normal bitumen where 5 mm bitumen is necessary for a life expectancy of 15 to 20 years it means an additional material consumption of 8 to 12 times the amount needed for our EPDM.

This is true not only for the production of the material, but also for the various transports (raw materials, finished products and waste), and the processing of the waste. All in all EPDM is an easy way for a significant contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions.

What is the lifespan of EPDM?

Commissioned by the umbrella organization of German industry and EPDM rubber producers in the Benelux, the German plastics centre of SKZ Würzburg undertook a study of the expected useful life and the minimum life of EPDM roofing membranes. There are 39 selected roofing projects in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Sweden, ranging in age between 1968 and 1996. After four years of testing, the results of the research suggested a theoretical life of 50 years.

Can EPDM also be combined with a green roof?

Hertalan EPDM is an ideal product for a green or living roof. As a roofing membrane EPDM is naturally root penetration resistant and the seams of our hertalan easy weld roofing and hertalan easy cover membranes have both been tested by the leading German FLL institute.

What is the minimum processing temperature of the adhesive and sealant systems?

All our adhesives and sealants require a minimum processing temperature of +5° C.

HERTALAN EPDM ROOFING SYSTEMS

Which applications are available for roofing systems?

With hertalan easy cover and hertalan easy weld Hertalan supplies two EPDM roofing systems that provide you with the best roof covering.

With hertalan easy cover you choose quality, speed and convenience. Our hotbonding membrane technology lets you virtually seal any roof at once.

Hertalan easy weld is a unique membrane system designed for mechanically fastened roofing systems. This membrane has an EW weld strip provided on the top and bottom of the roll edges. In this system the connection seam is not adhered but thermally welded with hot air. This EW weld is UV resistant.

Which product is suitable for which roofing system?

Hertalan UK can make a recommendation for any type of EPDM roofing system. Our products are all BBA certified, warranted and available in the following systems:

/ Loose laid under ballast hertalan easy cover or hertalan easy weld

/ Partially adhered: hertalan easy cover or hertalan easy weld

/ Fully adhered: hertalan easy cover or hertalan easy weld

/ Mechanically fixed: hertalan easy cover MF or hertalan easy weld MF

In which dimensions is Hertalan EPDM roofing available?

/ Hertalan easy cover is a membrane systeem.

Our factory “hot bonding” method means that we can connect 1.4 metre widths of EPDM to each other to create membrane sheets to specification. The widths can be determined in consultation with our team and the length can be between 20-30m. An important aspect is the handling during transport and on the roof, so the size and weight of the membrane has to be taken into consideration when deciding on the final measurements.

/ Hertalan easy weld is an EPDM roll system.

The hertalan easy weld rolls are available in 1.40 x 20 metre standard sizes (28 m2) and 0.70 x 20 metre. (14 m2). The smaller rolls are generally used in the perimeter areas to obtain optimum wind resistance when using mechanically fixed methods.

What thickness's are available?

For roof applications hertalan easy cover is available in: 1.2 / 1.3 / 1.5 and 2.0 mm thickness’s and hertalan easy weld in: 1.3 / 1.5 and 2.0 mm.

Which adhesives and sealants should be used to apply Hertalan?

For installation of our roofing systems you must distinguish between:

/ Surface adhesion;

/ Creating a seam;

/ Fixation to perimeters and edges;

/ Adhesion to adjacent brickwork and other upstands.

Surface adhesion

In a partially or fully bonded system, the Hertalan sheet is attached to the substrate with an adhesive. This can be one-sided with a PU adhesive (hertalan ks143) or with a two-sided contact adhesive (hertalan ks205).

In a hertalan easy cover system the seams are created with an adhesive connection. This is only possible using hertalan ks137 contact adhesive in combination with a seal of hertalan ks96 (adhesive sealant).

Application to perimeters and edges

All roof perimeters and edges have to be fully adhered regardless of which system is used. Only hertalan ks137/205 contact adhesives should be used in these areas with ks96 used for sealing off where necessary.

Adjacent brickwork and other upstands

The same rules apply for this application as for the perimeter and edge fixation.

We advise you to always consult the Hertalan installation guidelines.

What is the difference between a contact adhesive und PU adhesive?

Contact Adhesive

This adhesive has to be applied on both the substrate and the EPDM roofing membrane. The connection is established when both bonding surfaces are brought into contact with each other. If the contact adhesive is only applied on one of the parts there will not be an adhesive connection. Hertalan supplies two types of contact adhesive, hertalan ks137 and ks205.

PU Adhesive

This adhesive is applied only onto the substrate. After application the EPDM membrane can be laid into the adhesive once the solvent content has evaporated. Only the central areas of a flat roof can be adhered with a PU adhesive. It is not suitable for use in the installation of details, seaming and edge fixation. PU adhesives come in all shapes and sizes for various applications in the construction industry however only hertalan ks143 is suitable for Hertalan roofing systems.

The choice of adhesive is determined by the type of system that is to be applied, refer to the Hertalan installation guidelines.

HERTALAN EPDM DPC SYSTEMS

What applications are available for DPC systems?

Hertalan has two EPDM DPC systems – hertalan S and hertaled – both of which can make any structure water and wind-proof. Hertalan S are EPDM strips for sealing applications and hertaled is a unique lead alternative.

Hertalan S is an EPDM strip system and is a frequent solution used to prevent rising damp from foundations In cavity wall construction Hertalan S replaces the lead flashing and you can work in waterproof casings with loose strips or fully prefabricated frameworks. Curtain Wall Structures and aluminium frames are easily sealed with a single strip or an EPDM profile with a connection using a vulcanised hertalan S EPDM strip.

Hertaled is a lead alternative. One of its most eye-catching qualities is its environmentally friendly composition. During the production we integrate an aluminium expanded metal in our EPDM membrane, this creates a composite material of EPDM flashing with a bendable tip. Perfect to attach to an inner leaf and it can be bent or beat into almost any shape.

In what dimensions are the Hertalan EPDM DPC systems available?

Hertalan S comes in various widths ranging from 200 to 1400 mm. The rolls have a length of 20 metres.

Hertaled comes in 3 widths and two different lengths (6 and 12 metres):

/ hertaled 210 is 210 mm wide, 210 mm which is a composite of EPDM and expanded metal

/ hertaled 450 is 450 mm wide, 210 mm which is a composite of EPDM and expanded metal

/ hertaled 650 is 650 mm wide, 210 mm which is a composite of EPDM and expanded metal

What thickness's are available?

The hertaled has a thickness of 3.7 mm in the expanded metal composite section and 1.00 mm in the subsequent flashing.

The hertalan S is available in thickness’s of 0.75 to 2.00 mm.

Which adhesives and sealants should be used to apply the EPDM?

For installing our DPC systems you can work with three adhesive systems:

/ hertalan ks96 adhesive sealant;

/ hertalan ks137 contact adhesive;

/ hertalan ks205 sprayable contact adhesive.

hertalan ks96 adhesive sealant

Apply at least one bead approximately Ø 7 mm onto the surface to be bonded. The number of strips depends on the local situation. If an EPDM strip is wider then 300mm and / or thicker than 1.0 mm, a minimum of two beads should be applied. For other installation details, please refer to our guidelines.

hertalan ks137 contact adhesive

The ks137 is applied two-sided onto both the substrate surface and the EPDM membrane. This can be completed with a round brush or a fine roller. The adhesive is required to be touch dry before the EPDM is applied to the substrate. Once pressed together the areas should be compressed with a silicone roller. For other installation details please refer to our guidelines.

hertalan ks205 sprayable contact adhesive

The ks205 is applied two-sided onto both the substrate surface and the EPDM membrane with a closed spraying system. The adhesive is required to be touch dry before the EPDM is applied to the substrate. Once pressed together the areas should be compressed with a silicone roller. For other installation details please refer to our guidelines.

Can EPDM strips be installed with other adhesives?

Only Hertalan adhesives are suitable for installing Hertalan EPDM systems.

Should a primer be applied?

The choice of primer is dependant on which adhesive is to be used:

/ hertalan ks96

/ hertalan ks137 or ks205

hertalan ks96

Before adhering an EPDM strip onto a porous substrate a primer must be applied first. The same applies to surfaces with oil, these areas should first be cleaned and then abraded prior to priming. Priming should always be completed with ks96 special primer.

hertalan ks137 of ks205

For porous surfaces the contact adhesive will work as a primer itself. Applying an additional first layer by brush or roller the adhesive fulfils the priming function and creates a suitable surface for the subsequent adhesive application.

Can hertaled (lead alternative) also be applied onto roof tiles?

Hertaled is ideal as a flashing system as it can bend vertically, however in a horizontal deflection, the deflection is not permanent and therefore hertaled should not be used in this siuation.

HERTALAN EPDM ACCESSORIES

What are "accessories" ?

During the processing of the various Hertalan systems various difficult details are often encountered. Hertalan has specifically developed a wide range of accessories which ensures a complete and complementary EPDM roofing system.

hertalan easy stick

A composite of an EPDM strip with a butyl adhesive layer on the underside.

Which product is preferred for a new construction?

Hertalan S EPDM strip and the self adhesive hertalan easy stick are both suitable. It is important that that the surface is flat, dry and dust free.

/ hertalan easy stick

When using the self adhesive membrane it is recommended that the surface is primed. A single application of hertalan ks137 is excellent in this

  situation.

/ hertalan S EPDM strips

The EPDM strips are installed with a contact adhesive (ks137 or ks205) applied to both the surface of the gutter substrate and the bottom side of the

  EPDM strip.

Is EPDM also suitable for renovating gutters?

EPDM is ideal for renovating old gutters. EPDM does not leach and does not react to zinc and lead etc. and is extremely easy to adhere to these surfaces.

Which precautions should be taken when renovating?

It is important that the gutter is prepared and a clean and flat surface achieved. This means that loose particles and dirt should be properly removed. Clean with a wire brush, and then remove all traces with soap and water. Let the area dry well and degrease with methylated spirits if necessary.

hertalan S EPDM strips

The EPDM strips are installed with a contact adhesive (ks137 or ks205) applied to both the surface of the gutter substrate and the bottom side of the EPDM strip.
