EPDM MEMBRANES AS ROOF COVERING

EPDM membranes are frequently used as roof covering on flat roofs. EPDM is a synthetic rubber that has been manufactured since the 1960’s, and has proven itself over the years. Just like natural rubber, EPDM membranes contain unique properties, making it an ideal roof covering. It remains elastic and is resistant to temperatures ranging from -35°C to +120°C. Furthermore, it is fire and spark resistant. In addition, it is resistant to ozone and UV rays, all kinds of salts, bases and acids – with the exception of crude oil products – and has a proven lifespan of over 50 years. EPDM is sustainable, recyclable, reasonably cost effective and practically maintenance free. With these qualities, it surpasses traditional roofing systems in all areas.

WHAT MAKES EPDM SUITABLE AS A ROOF COVERING?

EPDM has many properties which make it the most sustainable roofing system. When compared to traditional roofing systems, such as bitumen, EPDM differentiates itself with unique properties:

✓  Proven lifespan of more than 50 years
✓ Naturally UV resistant
✓ Extremely sustainable
✓ Remains flexible
✓ Does not contain plasticizers

Low maintenance

FLAT AND LOW PITCHED ROOFS

EPDM is mainly used as a roof covering for flat and low pitched roofs. It offers, in addition to the extremely long lifespan of over 50 years, many advantages when compared to a bitumen roofing system. EPDM is easier, more efficient, and safer (without open flame) to install. Additionally, it is a lightweight roofing system and is installed in one layer. The factory-made joins and the joins made on site with hot air are also root resistant. This makes EPDM appropriate as a substrate for a so-called “green roof”, for example a sedum or grass roof.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT PRODUCT FOR YOUR APPLICATION

EPDM roofing systems are available in membranes and rolls. With an EPDM membrane, the watertight joins are made during the manufacturing process. The result is one large sheet of EPDM, with which large areas of roof (approx. 500m²) can be covered at once. The greatest advantage is that few, if any, joins need to be made during the installation process. This results in an efficient method of installation, with a significant reduction in man hours.

A roll of EPDM has a length of 20 meters and a width of 1.40 meters. Pre-installed on the edge is a green welding strip, with which the membranes are welded together. During installation, the strips are heated by means of hot air, fusing the membranes together and achieving a UV resistant, waterproof connection.
