What about fire resistance of EPDM?

We distinguish two types of fire safety: during installation and after installation.

During installation

When installing traditional felt roofing, burners are used to melt the bitumen and adhere it to the roof. The seam is also melted together with open flames. The safety demands regarding hot works during processing are becoming ever more demanding. The Dutch NEN6050 standard provides regulations on the "design conditions for hot works on roofs". When installing EPDM membrane there is no use of a naked flame. The EPDM can be attached in several ways onto the roof: adhered, mechanically fastened, or ballasted. The seams (if necessary) are adhered or sealed with a hot air gun. There is no requirement for naked flames! The insurance companies have also recognised this and the insurance premiums for roofers who work exclusively with EPDM membranes is significantly lower than the premiums for the bituminous installer!

In the Netherlands there are also requirements for the resistance of a roof to flying sparks, this is a requirement described in the Dutch Building Decree 2003. Hertalan EPDM easy cover FR membranes and hertalan easy weld products both comply to this regulation. We supply the most suitable roofing EPDM for each application, this can all be found in our KOMO certificate.
